Although not well-known to the casual reader, Onions remains a major voice in the horror genre, who was recognized by his contemporaries as such—including Algernon Blackwood, M. R. James, Arthur Machen, and Lord Dunsany.
 
His influence has persisted into the modern day and is clearly evident in the writings of Ramsey Campbell, Robert Aickman, and Charles L. Grant. These latter authors often explore themes initially appearing Onions’ tales: guilt, memory, perception, and the gradual exhumation of subconscious fears. Their characters, narrators, or protagonists are often Onions archetypes: mundane, largely ordinary persons who find themselves in the midst of totally inexplicable situations or circumstances.
